CARA (Consent Analysis Reporting Assistant) is a Vancouver-based personal safety application startup that provides users with unparalleled personalization and accessibility during high-fear situations through recommending personal and community safety options based on the user’s location, activity, and situation.
We founded CARA as part of the AI for Societal Impact Challenge organized by Microsoft, RBC, Agorize, and TECHNation at the beginning of 2020. Our mission was to leverage AI technology to solve a pressing societal issue. After 6 months of competition, CARA placed 1st out of 147 teams made up of 340 students from 93 schools across Canada.
Since then, we’ve been continuously reiterating and improving CARA based on market research and user feedback from potential users and community partners (e.g. SafeWalk services, campus securities) across dozens of cities across North America.
As we wrap up our journey at the entrepreneurship@UBC’s Core Technology Incubator program, we are accelerating our MVP development and are excited for our Alpha launch in March 2021.
With sexual assault and safety concerns on the rise, especially among female university students and young adults, we are looking to fundamentally challenge and improve the safety landscape so that we can empower more women and vulnerable people to take full control of their safety. Through CARA, we also want to de-stigmatize cultural and societal nuances of sexual assault through bringing both men and women into the conversations and raising awareness against rape culture.
While our first goal is to launch in and connect with communities across Canada and the United States, our long term vision is to deploy CARA globally so that more women, including those in third world countries, can be better protected.
